Burial Assistance

Douglas County Human Services

The Burial Assistance program provides payments to providers for burial or cremation services of low-income Coloradans. The benefits are used to cover reasonable and necessary costs of burial or cremation services.

The total cost of the cremation or burial services cannot exceed $2,500. The assistance provided will not exceed $1,500. The amount issued will depend upon the deceased person’s income and resources at the time of death.

For individuals who were not on public assistance or Medicaid at the time of death, the General/Emergency Assistance program may be able to assist with the cost of burial or cremation costs for low-income individuals.

Who is eligible for Burial Assistance?

Who is eligible for Burial Assistance (Public Assistance)?

If an individual was participating in at least one of the programs below, funding may be available to assist with cremation or burial costs  in the United States.

  • Old Age Pension
  • Aid to the Needy Disabled, Aid to the Blind, SSI Supplement
  • Colorado Works
  • Medicaid

The total cost of the cremation or burial services cannot exceed $2,500. The assistance provided will not exceed $1,500. The amount issued will depend upon the deceased person’s income and resources at the time of death.

Do I have to be related to the decedent to apply?

No, you do not need to be related to the decedent to apply for burial assistance on their behalf.

How do I apply for burial assistance and what documentation is needed?

There are a couple of ways to apply for burial assistance.

  1. You can print and complete this application and bring it to our office. Please be sure to include a good telephone number, in case more information is needed.
  2. You can print and complete the application and fax it to our office at 877-285-8988.
  3. You can print and complete the application and email to our office at dhs.inbox@douglas.co.us.
  4. You can also come to the office and complete an application in the office.

Documentation

We will need the following verifications for the decedent and spouse:

  • Bank statement/pay card statement: Printout from a bank showing the balance on the date of death of the deceased and/or spouse or provide a letter from a financial institution with the current balance on the date of death.
  • Registration card and mileage for vehicles that are owned or jointly owned.
  • Verification of earned or unearned income for the current month. This includes any social security, employment, pensions, or any other income.
  • Copies of all life insurance, burial insurance, or pre-need policies for the deceased, no matter the beneficiary and the surrender value for each policy.
  • Verification of any real estate owned, including land, house, mobile home (etc.) If deceased is a minor, must have verification for both parents.
  • Burial plot purchase information if purchased prior to death.
  • Cash on hand at the time of death.

What does burial assistance pay for?

Burial Assistance can pay up to $1,500 toward cremation or burial costs of decedents who were receiving benefits from certain public assistance programs, as long as the total cost of the services doesn’t exceed $2,500. The amount of burial assistance paid by Douglas County Human Services is based on the resources and assets the decedent had at the time of death.

If the decedent was married, the spouse’s resources will be taken into consideration when determining the benefit.

If the decedent was a child under the age of 18, both parents’ resources will be taken into consideration when determining the benefit.

Please note:

  • The funding cannot be used to transport the body.
  • If services have been paid in full already no benefit will be paid. This program does not allow for reimbursements.
  • If the total cost of the cremation or burial services exceed $2,500, no payment will be made.
  • Any money voluntarily contributed by a spouse or parent(s) toward the cremation or burial costs is used to reduce the state contribution.
