Colorado Revised Statute Section 18-12-114 describes requirements for safe firearm storage to prevent access by unsupervised juveniles and other unauthorized users. Unlawful storage of a firearm is a class 2 misdemeanor. Firearm storage in an unattended vehicle is also subject to regulation described in CRS Section 18-12-114.5, and unlawful storage of a firearm in a vehicle is a civil infraction.
CRS Section 18-12-108.7 describes definitions and penalties for unlawfully providing a handgun to a person under 18 years of age (juvenile) or permitting a juvenile to possess a handgun. Providing a handgun to a juvenile is a class 4 felony.
CRS Section 18-12-405 requires licensed gun dealers to provide a locking device with transferred firearms. Effective January 1, 2025, licensed gun dealers must post the following notices: “Unlawful storage of a firearm may result in imprisonment or fine.” and “Unlawful storage of a firearm on premises you own or control may result in imprisonment or fine. Unlawful storage of a firearm in a vehicle may result in a fine.”
