Regulations and Inspections of Child Care Facilities

Regulations
Child care facilities in Colorado must adhere to state regulations governing health and sanitation. Regulation training for child care providers in Colorado is available through COTrain using course ID 1061220. Training on the 2016 Colorado state regulation revisions is available through CoTrain using course ID 1062355.

Inspections
Child care facilities are regulated and inspected by Environmental Health staff to provide child care providers with education and ensure compliance with health regulations. Environmental health staff inspects child care centers every 1-2 years, depending on the program.

Child care facilities are licensed by the Colorado Department of Early Childhood Division of Early Learning and Licensing and Administration. A passing health inspection is required to obtain and retain a license.

Health inspections for all child care facilities can be viewed by visiting My Health Department (on your first visit, you will need to create a free My Health Department account).

New Opening and Remodel Inspections

New programs must submit a Child Care Plan Review Packet. Facilities planning to remodel must also complete the review packet and obtain approval prior to construction, and all review and inspection fees must be paid.

After construction is complete, an opening inspection must be completed prior to obtaining a license. Provide ample time to schedule and complete the inspection prior to your anticipated opening. Email EH@douglas.co.us to schedule an opening inspection.

Ownership Change or Information Updates

If a child care changes ownership or needs to provide other updates to information, complete the Child Care Application Form.

Room Additions and Changes

Opening new rooms or changing rooms requires an inspection. Contact Environmental Health at EH@douglas.co.us to schedule an inspection.
