School Zone Expectations and Concerns

Douglas County operates and maintains nearly 80 flashing school zone signs in unincorporated areas of the County. These remind us to slow down when school is about to start or just ended.

The County recently completed a nine-month project to upgrade schools’ signal controller cabinets to ensure the signs are always working and timed appropriately.

  • Douglas County promotes safety in school zones.
  • County Traffic Engineers, the Douglas County School District, and the Sheriff’s Office work together to ensure that students have safe routes to school.
  • And that those preferred safe routes are marked.

 

Follow these simple steps...

Students who walk, bike, or skate to school are asked to follow these simple steps:

  • Choose a safe route to walk to school with less traffic and intersections, avoid crossing busy or high-speed streets, and limit the number of streets crossed.
  • Look for traffic at every driveway and intersection. Be aware of drivers in parked cars that may be getting ready to move.
  • Obey all traffic signs and signals and wait to walk across the street until no traffic is coming. Listen to crossing guards if present and walk-don’t run, bike or skate, across the street.

Colorado State laws establish the rights and responsibilities for both pedestrians and drivers within all of Colorado per C.R.S. 42-4-802.

Schools Zone (FAQs)

How are school zones established?

School zones in Douglas County are established where additional caution is needed, even though no school crossing is involved, and the speed limit remains unchanged. Douglas County installs school signs to warn drivers they are approaching a school area that might include school buildings or grounds, a school crossing, or school-related activities adjacent to the roadway.

Who maintains flashing school zone beacons?

The school zone beacons on roads within unincorporated Douglas County are maintained by Douglas County Traffic Engineering and Operations. They are set to turn on for the school’s start and release times (including kindergarten – midday). Traffic staff confirms start/release times by contacting each school individually on an annual basis. Please report malfunctions to Traffic Engineering at 303-660-7490 or traffic@douglas.co.us .
