It’s now even easier for hikers, runners, cyclists and equestrians to enjoy the County’s spectacular views and natural settings with the opening of a milestone portion of the East/West Regional Trail (EWRT).
The recently completed 2.5-mile segment runs from a trailhead, conveniently located near RidgeGate Parkway and I-25, at Schweiger Ranch to the Cabela’s Drive connector trail west of I-25.
Successful completion of this project relied on the collaboration of local and state partners including the Colorado Department of Transportation, the City of Lone Tree, Rampart Range Metro District, RidgeGate Investments, Schweiger Ranch Foundation and Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO).
“The days of a single agency having the means to complete an undertaking of this magnitude are long gone,” said Douglas County Commissioner, Lora Thomas. “This project is just one notable example of creative solutions that can be achieved through strong community partnerships on behalf of those we serve.”
This is the first phase of an 8-mile segment of the EWRT made possible by a $2 million grant from GOCO to Douglas County and the Town of Parker to connect Lone Tree to the Cherry Creek Trail in Parker. Construction of the final portion of the EWRT is currently in design with construction slated for 2020.
When complete the East/West Regional Trail will extend 28 miles from Chatfield State Park to Parker connecting Douglas County with major trail systems statewide including The Colorado Trail and Cherry Creek Trail.
